Ibiza’s hiking network covers terrain that the beaches and clubs have made largely invisible to most visitors: undeveloped interior valleys, rural villages, the pine-scented northern coast, and the protected land within the Parc Natural de Ses Salines. The well-signposted routes weave through a landscape that looks and moves at a pace entirely different from the resort areas. Among the most satisfying destinations on foot is Sa Talaia, Ibiza’s highest peak at 475 meters, reached by trails that climb through scrubland and deliver wide views across the island and out to Formentera on clear days.
On the northern coast, trails run along the cliff edges to the stripe-patterned Portinatx lighthouse, one of the island’s most photographically distinctive landmarks, and down to coves that require a walk to reach and are proportionally quieter for it. The northern coast’s rugged character, with pine forests above and pebbly coves below, is best appreciated from a trail, not a road, and the views from elevation down to the teal Mediterranean carry a quality no beach-level perspective replicates.
Ibiza Outdoors, run by long-time Ibiza resident Toby Clarke, offers guided day walks focused mainly on the north, along with longer options including two-week around-the-island hikes and combined kayak and e-bike tours. Spring, from April to June, and fall, from September to November, are the most comfortable seasons for hiking, when the heat is manageable, and the island’s summer crowds have thinned or not yet arrived. A stop in Sant Joan, the quiet inland village, makes a natural pause point for coffee or tapas midway through a northern route. Bring water, snacks, and decent footwear on any trail, and add snorkeling gear on routes that end at the coast. The north of Ibiza, covered on foot over two or three days, offers a picture of the island that roads and beaches alone cannot provide. It is the quietest and, for many regular visitors, the most rewarding way to know the place.
