The 217-room Fairmont Tokyo opened its doors in summer 2025, in the waterfront Shibaura neighborhood on the eastern edge of Minato. Oversized art pieces and vibrant greenery fill a towering 30-foot lobby connected to an outdoor terrace. The indoor-outdoor spaces continue at the Fairmont Spa, which has a 65-foot infinity pool, as well as an outdoor deck with a hot tub. Treatments use Mikimoto Cosmetics, with options such as customizing a foot scrub with fresh botanicals. Rooms come stocked with cocktail tools and tea sets, pro-grade clothing steamers and multiple bath salts to choose from. The slippers are real, and they are spectacular.

Hoshinoya Tokyo may be in the middle of the Otemachi business district, but it feels a world, and perhaps a century or two, away. Guests take off their shoes on the ground floor to enter this wondrous ryokan, symbolically leaving the frenetic world behind, and in their rooms will find a kimono they’re encouraged to wear around the 84-room property. Guest rooms have traditional tatami mat flooring, and low-slung mattresses on wooden platforms. Their combination of sliding screen shades, and the building’s Edo Komon latticework facade shuts out the modern world even further, while a soak in your black stone tub will cure whatever ails you. Janu Tokyo opened in spring 2024 in the Azabudai Hills neighborhood, and while it may not be as supremely swanky as auntie Aman Tokyo—a near impossible task, mind you—it’s geared toward a more social crowd with eight dining venues. Rooms have gray stone slab flooring, Shoji screen dividers, and textured stone walls that create a mural-like effect. Its wellness facility is best in class, a four-story compound with more than 40,000 square feet of space. There’s a fitness center that puts many commercial health clubs to shame, an 82-foot pool, onsen baths, golf simulator, boxing ring, private movement and training studios, immersive spa houses, and salon. There is a startling lack of excuses to embrace wellness during a stay, in other words.

Best amenity: The overwhelming majority (90 percent) of guestrooms at Janu have balconies, practically unheard of amid the city’s high-end hotels. Step out for the standout feature.

Can’t–miss experience: A sumibiyaki, or charcoal-fired cooking, meal at Sumi. Technically in the adjacent mall—a staffer will help you find it, fear not—the restaurant has a 13-seat counter positioned around the grill’s hub of activity, serving an omakase menu with about a dozen dishes.

Award: A Culinary Tour de Force

When the Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo opened in Nihonbashi in 2005, it was designed to be in tune with nature: the tower is meant to evoke a large, all-encompassing tree, and the corridors its branches. The Park Hyatt Tokyo reopened in December 2025 following a 19-month renovation, with the aim of restoring the luster of an icon that first opened 30 years prior. The hotel is housed within Shinjuku Park Tower, designed by Pritzker Prize–winning architect Kenzo Tange. Its 171 rooms and suites have been redesigned by Studio Jouin Manku, with fresh artwork, custom furniture, and improved layouts, including larger bathroom wet-rooms, though the Tokyo Suite has retained its former charms in tribute to original designer John Morford.
