The German-born, Amsterdam-based DJ and producer has spent more than a decade developing a sound that has evolved dramatically—from the melodic and deeper music of her early years to the harder, faster and more expansive techno that now defines her international performances.
In January 2026, DJ Mag profiled Palmer as its cover star, describing her rise as phenomenal and highlighting her position within the global techno landscape. She had entered the previous year’s Top 100 DJs poll at No. 57, one of the highest new entries.
But the numbers only tell part of the story. Palmer’s career is ultimately about transformation: turning uncertainty into confidence, a love of underground music into a global touring career, and techno itself into a vehicle for connection.
Finding Freedom Through Techno
Palmer’s relationship with electronic music began long before international festival stages.
As a teenager growing up near Nuremberg, she was exposed to an unusually broad musical environment. Her father loved rock and metal, her mother preferred classical music, and Palmer also learned flute, piano and electric guitar. Later, she discovered the club world and became fascinated by the way techno crowds could lose themselves completely in the music.
After periods spent modelling, studying nutrition and living in different European cities, Palmer eventually returned to the music that had captivated her.
In 2015, she bought turntables and began teaching herself to beat-match through YouTube tutorials. It was the beginning of a second life. Within a few years, the hobby had become a career.
From Bedroom Practice to the International Circuit
Palmer’s first productions reflected the melodic and deeper side of electronic music. Her debut EP, Teaser, arrived in 2017, and by 2019 she was playing internationally, with bookings taking her to cities including London, Madrid, Zürich, Hamburg, Dubrovnik and Mumbai.
At Utrecht’s HRFST Festival in 2018, Palmer performed with the determination to make an impact. A clip of her behind the decks, energetically commanding the crowd during a breakdown, spread online and helped propel her visibility.
The Sound Gets Harder
Today’s Lilly Palmer sounds very different from the DJ who began playing deeper house and melodic techno in Zürich.
Her contemporary sets push toward the harder end of electronic music, incorporating big-room techno, trance, psytrance and hard dance. DJ Mag describes her current sound as full-throttle and built for stadiums, festivals and superclubs.
The difference is immediately apparent. There is weight in the kick drums. There is speed in the transitions. And there is a deliberate sense of escalation.
Rather than treating techno as a static genre, Palmer uses it as a framework for building tension and release—moving between heavy percussion, soaring melodies and commanding vocal elements. The result is music that feels designed for enormous spaces. And increasingly, that is exactly where it is being heard.
Bigger Than Techno
Palmer’s creative philosophy is encapsulated in the name of her own events brand and debut album: Bigger Than Techno.The phrase represents more than a musical direction.
For Palmer, techno became a source of confidence and a way to connect with people. Her career has increasingly embraced the idea that electronic music can be communal, emotional and empowering rather than simply functional dance-floor music.
That philosophy has also become part of her live identity. When Palmer steps behind the decks, the performance is not passive. She commands. She communicates. She pushes the room forward. It is an approach that helps explain why her sets work equally well in intimate club environments and enormous festival settings.
The Woman Behind the Artist
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Palmer’s story is that her success was never guaranteed.
Before becoming a globally established DJ, she experienced the uncertainty of modelling, moved between countries, built a separate career in nutrition and navigated periods when she felt isolated and unsure of her direction.
Music eventually gave her a way back to herself. The pandemic presented another enormous challenge. Like many touring artists, Palmer and Egbert lost their income and their usual professional routine almost overnight.
They began producing livestreams from unusual locations, including a beachside rooftop in Amsterdam and later locations in the Caribbean, Paris and Iceland. The strategy helped Palmer expand her audience while clubs around the world remained closed.
