Taylor Swift issues a warning about an ex on “Patient Zero” and addresses critics of her relationship with Travis Kelce on “Cleveland!” But her The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore track “Pink Clouding” contains an apology to an ex she wronged. “Pink clouding” is, in medical terms, an early stage of addiction recovery that “involves feelings of euphoria and elation,” much like the honeymoon phase of a relationship, per Healthline.
Swift suggests the subject of the song was a rebound when she was fresh off a breakup (“He cut me crimson, bled me dry / He crossеd my heart, I hoped to die (Hopеd to die) / Ripped all my orchids from the vine / You met me at a cursed time / I told you I was fine”).
In the chorus, she sings about the guilt she feels about how she treated the song’s subject, who had genuine feelings for her. “’Cause I was pink (Pink) cloudin’ from the thrill of it (Ha-ha-ha) / Skydiving as you wrapped your arms around my body / Gray (Gray) rockin’ where the arrow hit (Ha-ha-ha) / Years later, I still wonder how to tell you sorry / I didn’t want to let you down (Pink cloud, pink cloud) / So I left you up there on a (Pink) pink cloud (Pink cloud).”
In the bridge, she expands on that apology and why the relationship haunts her, singing, “I hope you realized my kind of trouble wasn’t worth it / And the way I treated you, you never deserved it / And I swear to God, to this day / I wake up scared that I left scars on a good person / And I gave you zero reason to believe it, so be it / But it didn’t mean nothing just ’cause I could leave it.”
Fans and outlets alike were quick to link the song to Swift’s ex Tom Hiddleston, whom she briefly dated right after she and Calvin Harris ended their yearlong relationship.
In her Reputation song “Getaway Car,” which fans believe to be about Hiddleston as well, Swift sings about rebounding. For context, she and Hiddleston were first seen dancing at the Met Gala in May 2016; on June 2, 2016, Harris confirmed he and Swift had privately broken up.
Swift acknowledges the earnest feelings of the song’s subject and the formal place where they met in the first verse of “Getaway Car”: “It was the best of times, the worst of crimes / I struck a match and blew your mind / But I didn’t mean it and you didn’t see it / The ties were black, the lies were white / In shades of gray in candlelight / I wanted to leave him, I needed a reason.”
In its chorus, she uses the phrase “flying,” evoking imagery similar to her “Pink Clouding” line, “Skydiving as you wrapped your arms around my body.”
She sings, “You were drivin’ the getaway car / We were flyin’, but we’d never get far” and “There were sirens in the beat of your heart / Shoulda known I’d be the first to leave / Think about the place where you first met me.”
For historical context, Swift and Hiddleston’s summer romance genuinely was a whirlwind: Within their first month of publicly dating, from June 15 to July 15, 2016, the couple was photographed kissing in Rhode Island, met each other’s parents in Nashville (Swift’s) and England (Hiddleston’s), went to Italy, visited the Vatican, celebrated Fourth of July at Swift’s party in Rhode Island (where Hiddleston wore that viral “I Heart TS” tank), and traveled to Australia together. By early September, breakup reports surfaced.
In February 2017, Hiddleston spoke to GQ writer Taffy Brodesser-Akner about the experience and how heartbroken he remained. “I only know the woman I met,” he said of Swift. “She’s incredible. A relationship in the limelight… A relationship always takes work. A relationship in the limelight takes work. And it’s not just the limelight. It’s everything else.”
He later told Brodesser-Akner in a second interview that he had no regrets about the relationship “because you have to fight for love. You can’t live in fear of what people might say. You know, you have to be true to yourself.”
Brodesser-Akner then writes about realizing that Hiddleston was genuinely heartbroken:
I turn my tape recorder off and I stand up, but he doesn’t. He shakes his head again, his hands clasped together, and he hangs his head. I sit back down and we talk some more because I finally understand that he isn’t here as someone who needs to explain his side in a PR battle; he’s here as someone who is still crushed by the end of a relationship.
So we sit and talk for a while. We talk about how relationships go sideways, how the ripples of a breakup can still pin you to a wall even months later. We talk about heartache. We talk about sadness and healing. We talk about what it’s like to love and what happens when the object of that love withdraws but all your love is still there. We talk about how those things can really change a person. The world will chip away at your optimism, and you just have to fight back. You have to be someone who is still full of joy and full of love.
Swift, of course, has a long romantic history leading up to meeting and falling for her husband, Travis Kelce, so while her experience with Hiddleston could’ve provided some inspiration for the track, she could also have easily drawn from multiple relationships or other people’s experiences.
The singer has previously warned fans to be careful about assuming songs are about any one person. She told The New York Times in April 2026, “There’s people who are going to try to do detective work, figure out the details. ‘Who is that about? What is this?’ When it gets a little bit weird for me is when people act like it’s sort of a paternity test, like, ‘This song’s about that person.’ Because I’m like, ‘That dude didn’t write the song. I did.’ But that’s part of it. You have to hold tight to your perception of your art and your relationship with it.”
The lyrics of “Pink Clouding” still offer a glimpse at Swift’s own reflections on her romantic past—and the regret she feels over hurting someone who loved her. Listen to the song and read its lyrics below.
